Private transfer from Fès to Chefchaouen

Both waysSame price
Distance195 km
DriveAbout 4 h
Per car, from€140

A private transfer from Fès to Chefchaouen covers about 195 km in about 4 hours, in your own car with an English- or French-speaking driver. You pay one fixed price for the car, from €140, agreed before you travel. The drive from Chefchaouen back to Fès costs the same.

There is no train to Chefchaouen. The choice is a coach, which is the cheapest way for one or two people, or a car, which picks you up at your door and stops when you want. Two of our drivers live in Fès, so your trip starts with a driver who knows the city.

Car, coach, grand taxi or a rental?

Damask private car, door to doorAbout 4 h€140 per car, up to 3 people
CTM coach, direct4 h 10 to 4 h 50145 MAD a person (about €13)

The coach times and fare are CTM's, read on its booking site in November 2026 for travel on two Thursdays, 12 November and 17 December. They can change.

The CTM coach. Four direct coaches a day, all at the same fare:

Leaves FèsReaches ChefchaouenTime

11:0015:154 h 15
12:4517:354 h 50
16:3021:104 h 40

You buy tickets on CTM's site or at the station. Book early around Moroccan holidays, when many families travel. A travel guide to this route says you pay a small fee for each bag in the hold, 5 to 10 dirhams, and that the coach has no toilet on board but usually stops at Ouezzane.

The train. There is none. The railway does not reach Chefchaouen.

A flight. Chefchaouen has no airport.

A grand taxi. Shared grand taxis also work in this part of Morocco. We could not find times or fares we trust, so they are not in our table. Ask at the taxi rank in Fès on the day.

A rental car. You can drive it yourself, on a road full of bends for the last part. Cars cannot enter the medina of Chefchaouen, so you will also need somewhere to park. Remember that a one-way rental usually costs extra, and ask the company before you book.

For one or two people on a budget, take the coach. The car is worth its price when:

  • you are three or more, or travel with luggage or children: three coach tickets come to 435 MAD (about €39) before bag fees and taxis, but the car takes you from door to door;
  • you want to see Volubilis or Meknès on the way, which the coach does not allow;
  • you want to leave at your own time, not at 08:00, 11:00, 12:45 or 16:30;
  • you get car sick on bends: in your own car you can stop whenever you need to.

Leaving from the medina of Fès

Cars cannot enter the old medina of Fès. Your driver meets you at the nearest gate or car park and helps with the bags. Give us the name of your riad when you book, and we tell you where to meet. Many riads send someone to walk with you and your luggage.

If you are staying in the Ville Nouvelle, your driver comes to the door of your hotel.

From Fès‑Saïss airport to Chefchaouen

Fès‑Saïss airport is south of the city, so the drive is a little longer: about 207 km and about 4 h 10. If you land and want to go straight to Chefchaouen, add your flight number when you book. We follow the flight, and your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with your name on a sign. We confirm the price from the airport on WhatsApp.

Stops on the way: Ouezzane, Volubilis, Meknès

Short stops for a coffee or a photo are part of the drive: ask for them when you book. A visit makes the day longer, so plan it with us. A visit is added to the price, depending on the visit, and entry tickets are yours to pay.

Ouezzane is a hill town on the road, 128 km from Fès and about 2 h 30 into the drive. It is a natural place to stop, and it costs no detour.

Volubilis is the best-known detour on this drive. The Roman ruins have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Going that way adds about 65 km and about 50 minutes of driving to the trip, plus your visit. The town of Moulay Idriss is close by. Leave Fès in the morning, and you still reach Chefchaouen before dark for most of the year.

Meknès has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Adding it to Volubilis makes about 1 h 30 of extra driving in total, plus both visits. That is a long day, so leave early.

The Akchour waterfalls are in the mountains near Chefchaouen and need a walk to reach them. We suggest keeping them for a day when you are staying in Chefchaouen.

Chefchaouen in a day from Fès?

It can be done, but the drive is about 4 hours each way, so you spend about 8 hours in the car and have only a few hours in the town. We suggest at least one night. If you only have a day, tell us the date and the time you want to be back, and we confirm the plan and the price on WhatsApp.

Arriving in Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen was founded in 1471. Its medina, known for its blue-washed walls, is a pedestrian zone of stairs and lanes, and cars stop at the edge. Your driver takes you as near your riad as a car can go and helps with the bags to the nearest point. Many riads send someone to meet you there. Give us the name of your riad and we tell you where to meet.

It is a small town that suits a night or two.

Chefchaouen to Fès

The drive back costs the same and takes the same time. Choose "Chefchaouen → Fès" at the top of the form, and give the address in Fès where you are going. The CTM coaches the other way left at 10:15, 13:00, 15:00 and 18:45 on the same dates, in 4 h 30 to 5 h, for the same 145 MAD.

Flying out of Fès‑Saïss? Count about 4 h 10 from Chefchaouen to the departures hall, then add the time your airline asks you to be at the airport. We agree the pickup time with you when we confirm the booking.

Going on from Chefchaouen

We have fixed prices for these drives from Chefchaouen too:

Want the same driver for the whole trip? Our 7-day tour from Casablanca goes through Chefchaouen and Fès, and you can hire a private driver by the day.

The road: what to expect

The bends come after Ouezzane, when the road climbs into the Rif. If you get car sick, sit in the front and tell your driver before you leave, and take something for it if you usually do. The car is air-conditioned, with water on board. Child seats are free, on request: tell us each child's age.
